Random Items from the Junk Drawer of my Mind #38

1. Here’s what I was doing a week or two ago:

shoe postcards

I’m posting a pic now that I’ve gotten a couple of emails letting me know they’ve started to arrive at their destinations. These are all fabric postcards (6″ x 4″) that I made and sent out as prizes or swaps. I’m bummed, though, that I forgot to get any photos of the backs. Anyone who got one of these want to email me a photo of the back of the card with the little drawing?

2. Here’s what I’m doing this week:

castle puzzle

That’s not ALL I’m doing, of course, but J is home for a few days and it’s pouring rain. That is NOT a good combination. J is very much an outdoor sort of guy and has a lot of trouble figuring out what to do with himself when bad weather keeps him inside. His restlessness was not mixing well with my moodiness and I more or less snapped a couple of days ago and bitchily demanded that he stop griping and find something - anything! - to do. This is what he found. So we (yes, WE…what, am I gonna tell him no after that when he says he wants us to work on it together??) are building a foam and paper castle. Please don’t be envious of our mega-exciting lives. ;-)

3. This is what my brother Mark did this past week:

Mark tat

It’s his first tattoo ever and he decided to jump in with both feet and get something big! His daughter (my lovely niece, Amber) designed it. Cool, yes? The words…

Buaidh No Bas

…are the motto of our mother’s clan and are Gaelic for “Conquer or Die.”

Here’s a close-up of the center:

tat center

He said he liked the experience and would definitely consider doing it again. I told him if he does, I want to watch next time! :-)

4. What a certain Canned-Meat-Pusher is doing this week is, evidently, making a concentrated effort to waste my time and bug the crap out of me! I’ve deleted nearly 200 junk comments from the SAME source in the past 3 days. Nearly 200!!! If there really is a Hell, there’s got to be a special place in it for people who pull that crap. We are not amused.

5. Apropos of absolutely nothing, I saw a link a while back where you could go to a website and let it award you a “peculiar aristocratic title.” Well, really, who could resist! So here it is.

You may now address me as:
Her Exalted Highness, Duchess Deb the Red of Throcking in the Hole
Get your Peculiar Aristocratic Title

Or you could just keep calling me Deb. I’m not so sure about the whole “Throcking in the Hole” thing. It sounds sort of, um…wrong. Heh.

6. Here’s today’s Daily Art Thang, where I focused in and got a more detailed shot of my favorite portion of yesterday’s photo:

Winter Dock 2

“Winter Dock: Take Two”
(Some of the above photos are clickable, some aren’t. Today’s fun game is to try them and see which ones open up bigger photos! WooHoooo!)

Ha! That site gives me a different title every time I go there! I forgot to save the first (and best) one, but the latest was “Very Lady Shirley the Fiendish of Pease Pottage”.

    I’m feeling definitely fiendish!

  2. on 15 Jan 2007 at 12:44 am JanePoe (aka Deborah)

What a fun hodge-podge of info. The tat is WAY cool, although I’m one to look and never do ;-)

My peculiar title is: “Lady Deborah the Excited of Walk upon Water” … I’m feeling very holy :)

(if I do start walking on water, I’m sure it’s the narcotics!)

Your post cards are awesome - what a creative spirit you are.

    Love, JP

  3. on 15 Jan 2007 at 3:09 am The Zero Boss

Love your bro’s tattoo. I gotta get the balls to get one done myself. (Mind you, I’ve been saying that for five years…)

  4. on 15 Jan 2007 at 4:28 am chiefbiscuit

Your productivity amay … amayz … I say, amazes me! Simply amazes me!

  5. on 15 Jan 2007 at 4:44 am Shaz

Hmmm… I just checked my junk mail folder and I haven’t cleaned it out since the beginning of December.Mostly, my e-mail program takes care of it quite nicely by putting it in a separate folder, and I clear it out once in a while. It currently has 2052 messages in it.
As for “Throcking in the Hole” it sounds like a normal English placename to me, as you’ll see if you study a map of England for a while :)
My current favourite is “Frisby on the Wreake”. My daughter thought we were having her on when we mentioned this one, but it is quite real.

My Peculiar Aristocratic Title is: Her Excellency Dorothea the Unique of Pease Pottage Get your Peculiar Aristocratic Title

    I am not!

  9. on 15 Jan 2007 at 6:54 am suzi-k

I suspect that Throcking in the Hole is where you go to live with the turkeys from Goblers Knob, and the odd ‘pecker or two for good luck!
What I want to know is HOW DID THEY KNOW????
Mine is Baroness Sue the Elephantine of Chalmondley St Peasoup!! OK who told them my dress size???
But it brings to mind a bit of Rhodesian rebellion in my youth (the 70s)… An English cabinet minister called Lord Bottomly was (with great lack of popularity) trying to negotiate peace during the war for independence, and I remember a friend of my mom’s saying “well if Chalmondley is pronounced Chumly, then I suppose we can address Bottomly as Bumly?”

  10. on 15 Jan 2007 at 7:46 am gkgirl

    so much to comment on!
that tattoo, to start off with,
    is awesome!
and the words, a clan, gaelic
    ack…i’m envious!

and cool about the 3-D puzzle!
    make sure you post pictures
    of the finished product!
    :)

  11. on 15 Jan 2007 at 9:55 am :-D eirdre

Yea DEB - send those spam guys right into the depths of hell!

Sorry that J is feeling cooped up - I’m expecting Tom home any second and although he has a garage to play in - I’m sure today will be spent sleeping in the living room (he took the red-eye home from CA) with the tv turned up too high.

How many sittings did your brother’s ink take? It looks wonderful and I’m jealous that you know your family’s Clan Motto - I’m sure mine is something like, Only 6 more years to serve on my sentence!

Glad you are starting to feel more up. I think the downs are important but damn do they suck while they are happening

Oh and glad to see you are back at your sewing machine! Whoo Hoo!

  12. on 15 Jan 2007 at 10:06 am suzi-k

    PS love the postcards!

  13. on 15 Jan 2007 at 10:45 am janet

Well, I’m Baroness Janet the Fortunate of Hoptonshire by Leer….so I guess I’ll leer while you’re while you’re throcking in the hole!! Now that does sound….um….VERY wrong!!

I always enjoy your junk drawer. The postcards are great, the tat is just not my thing but a beautiful drawing, and the photo is interesting. I like photos of close-ups of angles and shadows and “things” where you just aren’t quite sure what you’re seeing. And there’s that icy blue water.

  14. on 15 Jan 2007 at 10:50 am Tammy

Spam is NOT fun - sorry you’re getting SO much!

I love the tattoo! Wow - very ambitious for a first! Mine is much smaller - but on top of my foot! They tried to talk me out of the location. I would totally get another one though if I found just the right thing. I would NOT, however, pierce my nose again - that hurt too bad! (I like how it looks though!)

My peculiar title is… Milady the Most Honourable Tammy the Surreptitious of Biggleswade by Biscuit - I like Tammy the Surreptitious… but the rest just sounds like a bad equine line!

  15. on 15 Jan 2007 at 12:22 pm Liz

    Cool cross your brother has!

Someone recommended this thing called Spam Karma which is a plugin for Wordpress - it seems to catch most stuff. The only trouble I find with it is that you can only view the spam entries it has caught in Firefox, not IE for some reason! It is at http://unknowngenius.com/blog/wordpress/spam-karma/ if you’re interested.

  16. on 15 Jan 2007 at 12:47 pm holli

Throcking in the Hole sounds downright NAPPY!!

    that tattoo is SO COOL!!!

I will send you a pic of the back of my postcard if you can hang on. I was going to take a pic anyway and post about it. I didn’t know if it was okay to take a pic of the back because it was a personal message - I was going to ask first.

I love that you all are working on a puzzle. I think that is so fun. I want to do it too. But like, with you - not over here.

    xoxoxo ~

Her Royal Highness Holli the Blue of Happy Bottomshire

**wheeee - I love that they put “happy” in mine!! not so HAPPY about “bottomshire”

  17. on 15 Jan 2007 at 1:07 pm Star

    1. Wow. Mass production of flip-flops! Note to self: put the sex scene behind you and gear up the the next contest!

    2. I’ve been a jigsaw fiend since childhood but have never done the 3-D thing. Good for you for humoring J and working on it together; I used to beg for help (well, not so much help as company) and rarely got it.

    3. With all due respect to Amber’s skills (which we’ve seen here before)…OUCH!

    4. Ditto

    5. I find Imperial Majesty Star the Furtive of Chortling Chesterton a bit much when endorsing checks.

    6. As usual, love your keen eye. I’m so glad you’ve decided to keep the DAT this year.

  18. on 15 Jan 2007 at 1:51 pm Janet

Nice tattoo! The words tie in with the movie I saw this weekend, The Departed :-)

My peculiar title is: Very Lady Janet the Apocalyptic of Old Tonbridge Wafers

  19. on 15 Jan 2007 at 8:34 pm bee

mine is: Her Excellency Bee the Encompassing of Herring-le-hole…

    LOL. talk about double-entendre….

  20. on 15 Jan 2007 at 9:32 pm Catherine

The first time I tried I got Duchess Catherine the Coherent of Westessexchestershire. And on the second try, Marchioness Catherine the Implacable of Withering Glance. I’m not sure which I like better.
I forgot to say how much I love the postcards. You must have been busy to make such a big batch.

  21. on 15 Jan 2007 at 10:55 pm Kim G.

Oh - I really want a friend for my postcard I already have. I’ll have to pay attention and get in on your next arty swappy thing you do! They really are lovely!

The puzzle looks like the perfect project for a rainy day - just hide all the sharp objects when you’re working on it together!

  22. on 16 Jan 2007 at 2:14 am ceanandjen

Yes, the tattoo is very cool. What? You are only going to WATCH next time???? I jest, because I have been fine w/watching Cean get his tattoos (besides asking every five minutes if he is okay), but me???? Um…no…..WAY too scared.

This was a GREAT junk draw installment…make me smile and laugh!

    xoxoxo

  23. on 16 Jan 2007 at 7:13 am Amy

Love, Love, love the flip flop post cards, that background fabric ROCKS!

  24. on 16 Jan 2007 at 11:15 pm Cate

Those flip flop post cards are freakin’ phenomenal! Digging through your “junk drawer” is one of my favorite pursuits! So many fabulous finds. xo

  25. on 18 Jan 2007 at 10:28 am DebR

I loveLoveLOVE all the aristocratic titles y’all got!! We totally need to form our own sovereign nation so we can USE these puppies!! :-) (We can always tweak the ones y’all weren’t so happy about.)

    Sue, loved your “Bumly” story!

Deirdre, Mark got his tat all in one session - took about 3 hours. Your imagined family motto literally made me laugh out loud!

Tammy, my nephew wants his lip pierced and I keep thinking that’s gonna probably reeeeeally hurt if he ever does it. (So far my brother is saying no, not because he personally really objects, but because the school my nephew attends has banned facial piercings - other than ears - as of this year…assholes)

Holli, I wish you COULD come work the puzzle with us!

Star, you definitely need to enter contests again. You got a lot of votes last time and came really close to winning in both categories!

Jen, tats are too permanent for me. I’ve never fallen so in love with a design that I thought I’d want it on me forever and ever more. :-)

Big thanks to EVERYONE who commented. I loved reading each and every one!

  26. on 18 Jan 2007 at 10:28 pm swampgrrl

coolness! i love mark’s tattoo. my last name’s clancy, which, in gaelic means “ruddy warrior.” i always wanted to know if it was ruddy because my ancestors were always drinking or if it was some kind of skin rash….

needless to say, your family’s gaelic saying sounds much better.

  27. […] Click here to see her fabric postcards. I am the “foot avec sandal” on the bottom right.  I was going to post a pic on here, but darnit - I’m too exhausted to walk downstairs and take another picture right now so it will have to wait.  While you’re at it - tell her how cute her fabric postcards are.  Each layer is a different piece of fabric sewed on.  I’m so happy I got pink!
