Poetry and a Photo? It must be Thursday

I’ve kind of lost track of what the prompt is over at Poetry Thursday this week and I don’t suppose it matters much because I haven’t been in a poetry-writing frame of mind this week. Instead, I’ll share a poem I like. It speaks to me and is one I like to read now and then to remind myself of a truth I sometimes forget. I hope it speaks to you too.

Imaginary Bonds

Like rings around Saturn
the furies of her life encircle her.
Not knowing she is the planet,
she gives them power.

Her prison sky looms endlessly.
Her other lives were long ago;
she cannot seem to remember them,
cannot seem to find their moons.

When the time is right, she will know
the galaxy is more than Saturn -
she is not held by imaginary bonds
nor blinded by falling stars.

~~~Bonnie Michael
This is my second week hosting the Photo Thursday feature at the Create a Connection site and the challenge I issued was for people to share a photo of their hand or hands - with someone or alone; at work, play, or rest.
I used my camera timer to capture a moment that’s very me. I’m a person who can be (and often am) quiet, but I have a very hard time being still. I’m almost constantly moving some part of my body. I’ve tried to learn the gift of stillness of both body and mind, but have never had much success in that area. The ability to be quiet can disguise the busy scurrying of my mind, but there’s not much way to disguise the fidgeting of my body.
On my heart hand (my left), I always wear my wedding and engagement rings and an anniversary band that belonged to my mother. On my work hand (my right) I wear any one of several (mostly inexpensive) rings I’ve either received as gifts or bought myself just “for pretty.” I literally can’t tell you exactly how often I find myself messing with those rings, twisting them and straighting them, but I know it has to be dozens of times a day. So I set up a timer and captured one of those moments.
    I loved that poem. It very much suited my mood tonight. I also enjoyed the pic alot for some reason. maybe because it was a small glimpse into what sitting with you would be like. I’m the flipside. I’m quiet too, but so still sometimes you would think I’m a statue. I love to just… be.
    I constantly fiddle with my rings, too. They spin around my fingers. And they are pretty so I look at them a lot.
    I do the same thing. I love your hands they look great in this pic. They say you show your age in your hands. Yours are very young looking(I know thats corny but ya know what I mean)
    This poem speaks to me as well, so thank you for sharing it.
    This is a beautiful photograph…in so many ways.
    i think my comment got lost so am attempting to recreate which i find difficult at best so here goes : )
    thank you for sharing that poem, so beautifully powerful … wow!
    your hands are so beautiful, in motion’s grace … i too always move my fingers, tearing up bits of paper, mangling paper clips into unrecognizable shapes, even when i am quiet and still, my fingers dance their own tune …
    I love reading new poems…poems I have never read before.
    I like the quietness of this photo. Even though I know you are twisting, there is something silent about it.
    Hope you are feeling better!
    Melba
    Powerful poem, thanks for sharing, she’s a new poet for me. I like the photo too, hands say a lot.
    Great poem and picture. Lots of tension with those stripes and how the hands are not quite grasping.
    I wish I could learn the knack of stillness, Holli. I keep thinking maybe someday I’ll get it, but no luck so far.
    Mine spin too, Kirsty! :-)
    Aw, thanks, Shaz! Honestly, I think the photo is hiding a lot of sins. I’ve been told for years that I look younger than my age, but it seems to me that in the past year or so my looks are catching up to my age, and a couple of the places I feel like I can see my age the most are my hands and my neck. But I’m glad you liked the photo!!
    Thanks gkgirl! Maybe we need to form our own society…Ring Twisters United or something. :-)
    Thanks, Amber. That’s what I was trying for! Yay!
    Thank you, Jen!
    Yeah, isn’t that phrase amazing, Rethabile!
    I love the way you describe your hands’ motion, Darlene…dancing to their own tune. Lovely!
    Thanks, Janet! I like it a lot too. One of my more favorite photos I’ve taken lately.
    I actually think I get what you’re saying about the quietness, Melba. I think it comes across as contained somehow.
    Thanks, CGP!
    Thanks, Deb, glad you enjoyed the post!
