Poetry Thursday: Something to Talk About

Last week (when I didn’t participate) the theme for Poetry Thursday was “conversations.” I think that’s a cool idea and at some point may write something original for it, but the stuff percolating through my brain hasn’t gelled into a usable idea just yet.

However, there’s a poem I like a lot that I think fits last week’s theme (and I haven’t even begun to give real thought to the current theme of “rivers” yet!) so I’m going to share that one with you this week. I wish I could figure out how to play with word formatting in WordPress enough to type this out exactly the way it is in the book, but I can’t. I can do more with formatting posts in WP than I could when I used Blogger, but sometimes there are things I still can’t figure out. Oh well. I think the poem still works if I just type it “straight.”

Cold soft drinks
quenched my thirst
one hot and humid July day
after a cool drive
to a mountain store.
Seems like every woman
in the place
had on halter tops
displaying their expensive tans.
There were two women
standing in front of me
at the checkout counter.
One said to the other,
“You must be a lady of leisure,
just look at your beautiful tan.”
Then the other woman responded,
“No, you must be a lady of leisure,
yours is much darker than mine.”
A tall dark and handsome Black dude
standing behind me
whispering down my Black back
said
“Sister, if those two
are ladies of leisure,
you must surely be
a lady of royalty.”
And in a modest tone, I replied,
“SHO NUFF?”

Here’s today’s DAT, which has nothing whatsoever to do with the poem. It’s a photo taken in my back yard, featuring the new spring leaves of a baby oak tree we planted there just a couple of years ago - just in time for it to be attacked and nearly killed by a swarm of cicadas. Sigh…

But it’s come back now and looks healthy and is about six feet tall and growing, so yay! Someday (30 or 40 years from now!) it should be a regally beautiful shade tree.

Don’t you love that special color of green that all the new leaves have? I’m so glad your tree survived it’s introduction to the cicadas. Oaks are rather slow growing and it would have been a shame to have lost those first few years’ growth.

Of course, laides of leisure used to have pale, pale skins because they could stroll around under parasols while their servants worked in the hot sun :)
    The oak is beautiful.

Glad y’all enjoyed the poem! I like it a lot.

I think about the same thing you said, Catherine - it says a lot about how times have changed that it used to be a mark of leisure time (and therefore wealth) to have milky white skin, proving you didn’t have to work in the fields. Then somewhere along the way it became a sign of wealth to have tan skin, proving you had time to lay out or go to a tanning salon instead of spending all day in an office cubicle. Go figure.
