Getting To Know You: A Walk on the Spooky Side

I haven’t done the Getting to Know You Questions over at Create a Connection for a while now, because for whatever reason they just haven’t been things I’ve wanted to talk about (although I really appreciate the effort the monthly hosts put into that feature and I read it every week).

But this week the questions have a ghostly turn, which perfectly suits my mood as we continue the countdown to Halloween, so I think I’ll do them today.

1) Did you grow up in a household that believed in ghosts and spirits?

I’ve always believed in them, personally, but I don’t remember my family ever talking about it much one way or another - well, not when I was growing up, that is. As adults, after experiencing some losses in our family, we’ve talked about some of the strange things that have happened and some of my family members are skeptical and put it all down to coincidence, while others of us believe that some things that have happened genuinely edge into the Land of Weird.

2) Growing up, did you attend camp where you told ghost stories around the camp fire or were you one who found scary movies when you were in high school? What intrigues you most about ghost stories or scary movies?

I don’t really remember ghost stories around the camp fire, but I can remember a few slumber parties where we’d try to scare each other with stories, or we’d make lame attempts at seances, and I’ve always loved to read ghost stories. I’ve never been much of a fan of scary movies though, as a teen or now, especially the really gory ones. If I watch a scary movie at all, I go for psychological suspense rather than the “how many people can we kill in various disgusting ways” sort of scary movie.

3) Did your family ever have a story about a ghost/spirit that visited? Did anyone in your family ever see a ghost?

I don’t remember any family ghost stories. As far as anyone in the family ever seeing a ghost or spirit, the one person I know of in my family who has done that is me. When I was a little girl (four, maybe?) I saw and talked with one of my great-grandmothers after she died.

4) Have you ever been anywhere that you felt a strange presence you couldn’t explain?

LOADS of times. Sometimes I’ve felt things that feel like an actual presence, but many other times (much more common) I’ve just gotten vibes from a place - like more of a sense of the mood of things that have happened there, rather than of an individual presence, if that makes sense. That’s why some places make me feel instantly uncomfortable, or sad, or nervous, while other places can make me feel instantly welcomed and at home.

5) What’s the scariest or spookiest thing that’s ever happened to you?

Y’know…the one that’s honestly the most spooky thing ever is something I don’t really want to talk about here on a blog anyone can find, because it’s something that still kind of freaks me out years later and writing about it might set up this post to show up on search engines in ways I don’t want it to. Sorry to be all mysterious, but I’m trying to be honest and that’s the best I can do. If you ever meet me in person and want to know what I’m talking about, ask me what the thing was that freaked me out so badly about a newscast and a lake and I’ll tell you about it.

6) Have you ever known anyone who was not a believer suddenly have something happen to them that changed their mind?

Kind of, yeah…something that made someone really think anyway. It was right after J’s father died, and the night after his visitation/wake (the night before the funeral) I had a dream that I was in the living room of J’s parents’ house, sitting in a chair near the front door, and Sonny was sitting in his usual chair in the corner, feet up, smoking one of his nasty-smelling hand-rolled cigarettes. He told me that everyone should quit making such a fuss, and just put him in the ground and get on with their lives, and he seemed so exasperated and contrary - so very Sonny. It was extremely vivid and real-feeling. (This isn’t all that uncommon for me though. I have always tended to have “visit dreams” with people who have died.)

The next day I told J about it and he asked me to tell some of his other family members. So I did, and one of his nephews (who was 20-something at the time, FWIW…young adult rather than a kid) turned pale and freaked-out looking and said he’d had same experience, the same night. He was sleeping on the couch in J’s parents’ living room and in his dream he was still on the couch, but he opened his eyes to see Sonny sitting in his chair in the corner, smoking and looking exasperated, and in this dream Sonny told him exactly the same thing that he told me in my dream. This nephew had never believed in any of that “woo-woo shit” (his term…heh) before then, but that experience…well, it made him think.

Thanks, Holly, that was fun!

Don’t forget, y’all, you still have a couple more days to guess the lie in my 7 Truths and 1 Big, Fat Lie post in order to try to win a prize!

Here’s today’s Daily Art Thang.

Reading your answers I realized that when people have asked about scary movies I always say I can’t stand them, which is true, but it is all the blood and guts I don’t like. I love psychological thrillers and there is a BIG difference between the two!

I’m guessing #5 was something that you dreamt about or had thoughts of that came true. Now I’m dying to know!

I didn’t realize your blog had moved Deb, I’m glad I found it and thanks, I’m so glad you liked the collage and yes, isn’t it crazy about that camp?!

Oh I had that experience with slumber parties too, I loved them for that! I was always coming up with spooky things to try out, LOL. Nice to see you did that kind of thing too.

You definitely sound empathic Deb, a sensitive like me. It’s interesting we can believe in ghosts and stuff like that but not talk about it in our families.

One day I hope you feel up to sharing your spooky story with us. It’s taken me an entire year to feel comfortable enough to talk about that woman in that hotel room. First time I’ve ever been terrified by the supernatural.

Fun post. Hands down, the most scared I have ever been in my life was when I opened my mailbox and saw a letter from the IRS. Very scary.

You should call your DAT the CREPPY vine…it looks like it’s floating into the room!

I believe in that woo-woo shit. Really, I do. “Visit” dreams would be part of the reason.

    This was fun to read!

I used to love playing with the Ouija board that was at my grandparents’ house. That’s about as spooky as I’ve gotten.

Yes, exactly, Melba! Psychological thrillers can be very scary, while those slasher movies that most people think of as scary movies are, IMO, just sick and gross.

She, if you really want to know, let me know and I’ll email you.

Hi Suzie. Hhhmmm….the blog is right where it’s been for almost a year, so not sure why you thought it had moved, but either way, hi!…glad to see ya! :-) Yep, I’m strongly empathic (too much so sometimes…I’m not very good at filtering/blocking it when I’m tired or stressed). As for the story, I don’t mind sharing it with people I know, but I doubt I’ll ever post it publicly because of not wanting it viewable by search engines.

Day-UM, Mrs. G. that would scare the bejeebers out of me too!!!

Doesn’t it, Andi! I thought it was very creepy…it’s what caught my eye about it, the way it was invading.

Me too, Vanessa. If we ever get to meet in person, we’ll compare notes on the visit dreams! (which I personally don’t believe are truly dreams at all, but actually are meetings on a spiritual plane)

I can sympathize, Michelle! For me though, I think I’m more frightened of a lot of present and physical things that I am by spirits. Sigh…

    That’s probably spooky enough, JC!

Great answers! Thanks so much for playing. I am fascinated by “visitation dreams” and am always amazed at how many people have had them, yet, they refuse to believe in spirits. Your answers were very fun and fascinating. I love the picture of the vine too.

I know, Holly, I agree! I have a friend like that, who has those sorts of dreams all the time and still doesn’t believe they’re anything more than a blip in her subconscious. I feel sure they’re more than that.
