SPC: Pattern, Week 2
DebR on Aug 07 2007 at 12:01 am | Filed under: Self-Portrait Challenge
Continuing this week with what would normally be the first week of the August theme of Patterns for the Self-Portrait Challenge, it’s actually the second week for this theme for me since I decided to go with Patterns last week instead of Elements. Did that sentence make any sense whatsoever?? Gaahh! Anyway…
I had a sort of pattern theme going with my right hand last week (kind of still do!) so I decided to feature that this week. When I was in Gatlinburg with the Fam a week or so ago, one of the shops we stopped in featured a lot of Irish and Celtic stuff. They had some pretty silver rings, so I offered to buy one for my niece Amber for her birthday and while we were at it I decided to buy one for myself. And then, deciding if one was good, two was better, I bought another. Heh.
Both of them are Celtic knotwork patterns worked in silver - one for my right ring finger and one for my right thumb.
The next day Amber and I also decided to get henna tattoos on our arms. She got a Celtic knotwork design on the inside of one wrist, while I got a knotwork band on the same arm where I’ve been wearing the rings.
It’s almost faded away now, but is still faintly there (and was more visible the day I took the photo), so between the two rings and the henna tat, I had a very naughty knotty sort of theme going on my right hand.
I decided to take the photo against a window and the grid of the window screen and reflection of the lace edge of the curtains added another layer of pattern. The pattern of the lace is rather uncannily like the pattern of the henna tat!
I couldn’t decide if I liked it better in color or B/W, so I’ll show you both.

“Self-Portrait with Lots o’ Knots: Take Two” (Both are clickable if you want to see them larger in a new window.)
Edited to add:
Because Patty requested it:
“Self-Portrait with Lots o’ Knots: Take Three”
Edited again:
“Self-Portrait with Lots o’ Knots: Take Four”

If I had to choose, I would have to say I like the B&W better because I like how the screen looks better in that one. But, O Wizard of the Elements, how about a third choice? Hand in color and background in B&W?
Patty
And what about background in color and Hand in B&W?
Love take 3…that was a great idea. Maybe someday I’ll have the time and inclnation to play with Photoshop the way you do! I’ve got enough design ideas to last three lifetimes already.
I’m with Janet, I think the B/W hand on color screen would be cool. And I say that, not because she suggested it first (I am SO not a klingon), but because that’s what I was thinking when I scrolled down through the first two photos. It seemed to me that the play of lace on the colored one was beautiful, but I like the hand from the B/W because it put the emphasis on the rings and henna which, after all, are the patterns for the SPC.
I can see that you and Photoshop are becoming good friends
I often look at the photos of a post first and then read it . I thought “i never knew Deb had a wrist tatoo?” but I see it is henna. Very pretty. I have never tried it, but I would like to!
I love henna. I’ve always wanted to get something super elaborate, but then I think I would hate to see it fade. Sometimes I henna my hair (LUSH makes GREAT henna, btw).
I love the pics. This was a perfect idea for this month’s theme!
I like the full color one best. Cool idea with the rings/tat/screen/curtains.
I always wanted to get a henna tat! Like to see if i would like a real one, maybe. Yours looks cool!
pretty, like them all! your new rings are beautiful! xxx
Nice photos! I like the full color one and the color hand on B&W background best.
DEB! I love #4…it looks yearning and otherworldly!
wow, these all amazing. so interesting how the feel of the photo changes with color added or subtracted.
nice set here Deb!
i like the last one best. very cool
